A touch of South London melancholy graced Brighton’s St Mary’s Church as the folkish Turin Brakes drew their mini-tour to a triumphant conclusion.
Playing their first LP The Optimist from start to finish, and keeping it as close as possible to its original production, Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian treated the congregation to their wistful beginnings amid celestial surroundings.
band’s live performance contextualises it. Hearing the album live brought new depths to the bleak lyrics and burgeoning energy that characterised the LP. Key moments included Underdog, Emergency 72 and The Optimist. Not since Sister Act has a church experienced such impromptu dancing.
