Situated at Lorne Beach, which is about 2 hours south of Melbourne along Victoria’s glorious Great Ocean Road, The Lorne Pier to Pub ocean swim is a 1.2 kilometre, point to point race organised by the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club.
Lorne has changed much from its inception as a simple challenge among Surf Life Saving Club members to its present status as one of the most sought-after entries in the swimming calendar. In 1998 it entered the record books as the largest ocean swim when over 3000 people took to the water and now celebrities, politicians and even former Olympians including one of Australia’s sporting legends, Kieren Perkins, have taken on the challenge.
Lorne remains one of the Australia’s most important swims and for those who have competed in 10 or more races and received in turn a much coveted place as a member of the Shark Bait Club, the bragging rights are massive.
